Step 1: Pepare your machine to host the demo machine:

(a) Determine whether your PC/laptop supports virtualization:

The following tool helps you to determine whether you’re PC have a CPU with support for hardware virtualization

Determine whether your PC support hardware virtualization

(b) Enable Virtualization on your PC using BIOS:

If your PC supports hardware virtualization, sometimes it's not enabled by default. You have to enable from BIOS settings.

Please read the below link to get the steps on how to enable VT on PC models like Dell, HP, Lenovo ThinkPad, Acer, Asus, Samsang and Panasonic.

(c) Download Virualbox binaries

Download Virualbox binaries on the download site for Windows (If your PC/laptop is windows based). Please download theVirtualBox 3.1.6 for Windows hosts.

(d) Download Project Server 2010 Beta demo image from Microsoft downloads

The SharePoint 2010/Project Server 2010 RTM Virtual Machine has been released. Now, Beta demo imgae is no longer available.

Download Project Server 2010 VHD image from Microsoft Download Center using your windows live ID.

NOTE: The below steps in this article are applicable to Beta Demo Imgae. But Now, you are using the RTM image, so few of the steps below may not be applicable.

Project Server demo image consist of 15 files, you have to download all the files.

Double click the file "2010-4a Project Server 2010.part01.exe" to create Project Server 2010 Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) file

This extraction process will create the folder called "2010-4a Project Server 2010" and you will find the sub folders "Hard Disks", "Machines" and "Snapshots".

(e) Copy Project Server 2010 VHD and Machines config file to VirtualBox Folders

Copy the 2010-4a.vhd file created from step d to Virtualbox's Harddisks folder

FYI: On Winodws 7 PC, the default location of the VirtualBox is:  C:\Users\username\.VirtualBox

Example: C:\Users\chak\.VirtualBox

VirtualBox installation will create the folders called "Harddisks, Machines".

Also copy the XML file created in Machines folder from step d to Virtualbox's Machines folder.

(f) Setup the Virtualbox VHD and Memory/Network settings to host the Project Server 2010 Demo Image

Refer the VirtualBox user manual for the detailed steps on how to setup the Virtualbox

Also, I came across with great article by Rolly Perreaux, he provided the detailed steps with screenshots on VirtualBox Settings. Please use this link to walkthrough the steps.

Note: Project Server 2010 is a memory intensive application. Now it’s a single product having Project Server, SharePoint Server and Portfolio Server under one umbrella. So, I suggest using the high configuration machine to run this image. You should have minimum 4 GB RAM on your machine. 8 GB RAM is recommended.

I am using the PC with following configuration:

Intel ® Core i5 Processor M540 @2.53 GHZ; 64-bit processor; 8 GB RAM; Windows 7 64 bit Operating System

Setup memory setting to 2GB or more depends on your machine's configuration.
( I setup 3.3 GB RAM for my virtual machine.)

Network Settings:

On Sun VirtualBox GUI window, click on Settings -> Network -> Choose the adapter “Internal Network” and name it as” internal”

On Sun VirtualBox GUI window, click File menu -> Preferences -> Network -> click on “Edit host-only network (Space)” icon

Define the following settings.

(g) Start Project Server 2010 demo image from Virtualbox

Start the Project Server 2010 demo image from Virtualbox

Log in to machine by clicking right CTRL + Delete

Enter login name as Administrator and Password as pass@word1

After you login it takes 10-15 minutes first time to finish the configuration and new drivers to detect and installs the new hardware. Once it is done, it will ask to reboot.

After reboot the demo machine is ready to use.
