Workaround for Simple / Empty Workspace:

To ensure the category of workaround, the problematic projects workspace will not have any data. Meaning, the project workspace simply contain no vital information or information that has been recorded somewhere else as documentation.

In this case, workaround is simple and straight forward of removing workspace, deleting the workspace and recreating it. You can upload the data from documentation you have and make the customization so that none of out of the box columns is DELETED.
  • Step 1: Remove project’s association with Workspace
  • Step 2: Delete a workspace
  • Step 3: Publish Project Plan

Step 1: To remove the workspace association with project, you need to follow the below steps:

  • Go to Project Web Access and click on Server Settings. Click on Project Workspaces.
  • Now in the grid select the project that was reported for the WSS Sync error and click on Edit Site Address button which is above the grid. Note down the site URL which is something similar to /sites/projectserver_XXXXXX
  • And choose Remove the URL for the SharePoint site and click OK. Ensure the deletion of site once the page is reloaded. The project in the grid now should show empty URL against it.
Step 2:  If this project is created in MSPS 2007, to delete the workspace completely follow steps as below:
  • From the Project Web Access and click on Site Actions menu and click on Site Settings
  • Under Site Administration section click on Sites and Workspaces
  • Scroll down to the workspace that you have removed just now for the project and click on the “X” symbol to delete it completely. Click OK in the following page to ensure deletion.

If the project is a migrated one from MSPS 2003 and in MSPS 2003 you had provision the workspace under sites folder of SharePoint follow the steps as below:
  • Go to the SharePoint Central Administration site, click on Application Management.
  • Under SharePoint Site Management, click on Delete Site Collection
  • Now select the Site Collection dropdown button and choose Change Site Collection
  • On the next page, in URL Search paste the workspace address that you copied on step 1 and click on magnifier icon (use /sites/projectserver_XXXXX)
  • You will see the site found and showing along with project plan name. Ensure the Title information before proceeding
  • Now, click OK to delete the site collection
At this point the project plan will not have the associated workspace.

Step 3: Publish Project Plan
  • Open the MS Project 2007 client program and load the particular project and publish it. Now, this will create a workspace for your project. This will work if your server settings enforce creation of workspace when project is published. Otherwise, you will have to create the site from PWA – Server Settings – Project Workspaces and select the project and click on Create Site.
  • Now your project will publish without this error. You can upload/add those workspace contents by referring the documentation you have.
